Abstract
There are two types of appliances in a PTP compliant network; Boundary clocks and Transparent clocks. In hyper-scale networks the clock tree is shallow but wide. This means that the number of clients (ordinary clocks) need to scale up rapidly if you move down the clock tree. Traditionally, scaling up the number of clients is done via boundary clocks. However, the integration of boundary clocks in existing switches is more involved and requires major changes in the packet flow. Alternatively, transparent clocks can offer the scale up, with the main difference that they can only provide extension of compliant physical connections and not any scaling in client packet synchronization. In this presentation we will do a deep dive into how a transparent clock works. Also, we will cover various applications for the transparent clocks.
